The Asheville Art District
The River Arts District is one of the highlights of a visit to downtown Asheville. It organically grew out of necessity, making it a special place to experience. There was a high demand for the incredible artists in the area to have affordable studio spaces that fit their needs. The district was born from an industrial zone just east of the railroad tracks that were lined with empty warehouses. This creation shifted the entire community into an atmosphere of endless creativity, business, art, and entertainment.
You can easily find your way around the RAD, as there are plenty of maps and guides for visitors. You can also check out their website for all the details. If you want to take a class, buy some artwork, admire some artwork and follow it up with a great meal. During the fall, the RAD hosts its annual Studio Stroll, where you can visit as many studios as possible in a day. They set you up on a trolley to visit all 22 buildings. You’ll be able to view the work of around 180 artists.
If you’re not a tour fan, you can do the trek on your own. Make sure you dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes because the studios can be spread out. You’ll be able to grab a coffee at a local shop, a delicious breakfast, and everything you need along the way. Many local shops feature the works of the local artists.

Odyssey offers drop-in art classes, lectures, and exhibitions, so if you’re feeling inspired, you can take a chance and have some fun. You’re sure to find every kind of art in every medium along the district, including painting, glass blowing, sculpting, jewelry, ceramics, wax, illustrations, photography, cartoonists, and woodworking. You can see glass blowing demonstrations at the North Carolina Glass Center and join a walk-in session to create your own little piece of magic if you wish!
The Asheville River Arts District is a charming place where so much learning, imagination, and creativity builds and comes to fruition. If you love to create or your kids are full of unique ideas, exploring this incredible place will allow them to fall in love with creating.
